THE HISTORY OF SOUTHWOOD
BAPTIST CHURCH, FORT WORTH
A church is more than a building or a place for Sunday School, worship services, youth and other age-appropriate activities. Indeed, a church is a congregation of believers - a family - an organized group of people who follow Christ and desire to serve Him. Others are constantly invited to visit the services and participate in the activities of the Body. Many eventually become members themselves. Southwood Baptist Church organized on September 17, 1978, with thirteen charter members.  The first offering went to missions.  We have enjoyed the blessings of God. Others have joined with us and, today, we have established a ministry in this community that shines forth as a lighthouse of the gospel, a fortress of the faith. We continue to grow, thrive, send out the gospel, and perform the ministries of our dear Lord.

The founder of Southwood, Pastor Lloyd Taylor, courageously fought cancer and served the congregation until his passing on July 24, 2006.  His beloved wife, Inez, joined him in Heaven two years later.

During Pastor Taylor’s hospitalization, Youth Minister James Virtue Robinson served as the interim pastor.  On October 29, 2006, the congregants voted Jay Robinson to be the successor of Pastor Taylor in the role of lead pastor.

Southwood experienced a period of unprecedented growth for the next two years and the facilities also had many changes.  The most noteworthy physical change was the addition of a “reception hall” in the spring of 2007.

Pastor Jay ‘s July 27, 2008, resignation resulted in Southwood Baptist Church calling Pastor Dan Williford, in September, 2008, to be the third pastor in the storied history of Southwood.

In the fall of 2008, Pastor Williford led the congregation in celebrating its thirtieth anniversary. Several of the charter members were still living and were recognized.

In the spring of 2009, the congregation moved to the Fellowship Center as the existing auditorium got a major facelift involving everything from new carpeting to a re-designed platform/front of the church.

This brief introduction is a call to our membership, as well as to all those who have honored us with their visits, to join our service for Christ. Be a faithful Christian and loyal member. Be a true friend of the church. Be steadfast in your faith. Attend the services. Participate in the worship. Serve the Lord with us; honor Him!
